Strategy has created a $1.59 billion cash pool for Bitcoin, buybacks, debt and preferences, while building more flexibility into its capital stack.
Strategy announced that it has added another lever to its increasingly complex and hedge fund-like corporate structure, establishing a new $1.59 billion “USD Cash” pool that gives the company more freedom to move capital between Bitcoin, buybacks, debt and its preferred stack.
What’s the scoop?
- A new cash compartment: Unlike Strategy’s existing USD reserve, which remains limited to paying preferred dividends and debt interest, USD Cash can be used much more widely. The strategy can deploy it to buy Bitcoin, repurchase MSTR or preferred stock, pay off convertible debt, cover dividends and interest, or replenish the USD reserve. - Funded through MSTR: Strategy sold 18.26 million shares of MSTR for $2.01 billion last week. Of the proceeds, $136.4 million funded STRC redemptions, $300 million was contributed to the U.S. dollar reserve, and the remaining $1.59 billion was established as U.S. dollar cash.
- Two levels of liquidity: The move effectively gives Strategy a two-tiered cash setup: the now $5.1 billion reserve dedicated to servicing its preferences and debt, as well as this new $1.59 billion pool management that can be deployed wherever pressure or opportunity appears. Previously, the USD reserve could not fund redemptions, forcing Strategy to use separate funding or Bitcoin sale tranches instead.
- Absent Bitcoin activity: The strategy neither bought nor sold Bitcoin last week, leaving holdings unchanged at 840,447 BTC. Although USD Cash was explicitly available for BTC purchases, Strategy instead used the new revenue to support STRC and create liquidity, continuing a recent shift toward managing a larger capital stack rather than deploying more into Bitcoin.
