StarkWare’s Eli Ben-Sasson calls Starknet an L1 for “post-quantum agility,” citing AI and quantum threats.
Starknet says it’s “actively considering” moving from an Ethereum Layer 2 network to a standalone L1 network, defining this transition as the path to becoming “the first fully quantum-resistant network” with a goal of 2027.

The pitch: Minutes before Starknet’s post Thursday morning, StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson ask your followers the question: Is “Starknet becoming a L1 of post-quantum agility” a good or bad idea? The thread is related to his Token2049 speech.

Bunker mode, once again: Borrowing Drake’s phrase from the day before, Ben-Sasson said that rapidly evolving quantum computing and AI together call for a “bunker mode,” with chains needing to quickly future-proof their cryptography.

The L2 trap: As L2, Ben-Sasson noted that Starknet relies on the security of Ethereum. Moving to L1 would allow it to perform its own security migrations instead of waiting for Ethereum, which it says is aiming for full quantum resilience by the end of 2029, or Bitcoin, which has not set a date.

Nothing decided: There is no formal proposal or vote yet. Notably, June from StarkWare post-quantum roadmap left Ethereum-dependent elements, like bridge messaging and blob data, awaiting Ethereum’s own upgrade.
