The founder of OpenRouter created OpenSea, then “Stripe for AI”. Now, Stripe is buying the company in a massive transaction.
Stripe agreed acquire OpenRouterthe AI model routing market, for more than $8 billion in cash and stock, making it one of the largest AI infrastructure acquisitions to date.
What’s the scoop?
- What OpenRouter does: It is a neutral routing layer that provides developers with an OpenAI-compatible API to reach +400 models across dozens of providers, with automatic failover and token pricing, reducing inference spend by ~5%. It claims 8 to 10 million developers and tens of billions of tokens flowed every week.
- The numbers: OpenRouter has raised a total of $164 million, most recently in May at a $1.3 billion valuation backed by CapitalG, a16z, Menlo Ventures and others. Stripe’s offer values it at more than 5 times that three months later.
- Not a cold acquisition: OpenRouter has been running its billing on Stripe since January, using it for global payments, invoicing, taxes, and anti-fraud tools. This agreement merges the existing payment rail directly with the layer that decides which model will be used and at what price.
- The crypto track: OpenRouter CEO Alex Atallah co-founded OpenSea and led it as CTO throughout its NFT years. He called OpenRouter “the AI equivalent of Stripe,” and this new deal makes that literal. Meanwhile, Stripe already operates Tempo, the stablecoin-focused blockchain launched in March, alongside the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP), an open standard allowing AI agents to make payments autonomously. Owning OpenRouter connects a massive portion of the world’s model traffic directly into this stack.
