Solana’s Alpenglow upgrade will go live on October 21, with a finality goal of around 150ms.
Solana’s most ambitious consensus rework, Alpenglow, will activate in epoch 1064 on October 21, around 3:00 p.m. UTC, by the Solana Foundation. It replaces TowerBFT, the voting system that Solana has used since its genesis, and aims for a finality of around 150 milliseconds, compared to around 12.8 seconds today.

Voter first, Rotor second: Next week’s Switch will only ship Votor, Alpenglow’s new voting engine. Under Votor, validators directly exchange signed votes and group them into compact certificates. Rotor, one half of the block spread design, needs its own governance proposal and does not yet have a date.

Simplified purpose: Solana’s “confirmed” and “finalized” states effectively merge, so bridges and trade no longer have to choose between speed and certainty. In return, Alpenglow abandons the classic one-third fault tolerance bar for a “20+20” model: the network remains safe with up to 20% of stakes acting maliciously and continues to function with an additional 20% offline.

Customer rework: Neither Firedancer client will support the migration window itself, so these operators must temporarily run Agave. The Frankendancer hybrid client is also permanently retired. Firedancer Family customers got about 14% to 26% of the SOL staked this year, depending on the tally.

Vote against the fees, burn them: The per-vote fee of around 1 SOL per epoch gives way to a flat entry ticket of 0.8 SOL, and the ticket is burned to the ground. Because votes leave gridlock, Solana’s gross TPS will plummet from day one. No-vote GST is the number to watch for apples-to-apples comparisons.

The big picture: Alpenglow was first unveiled at Solana Accelerate in May 2025 and was expected as early as Q1 2026. This slow rollout is the right call to trade consensus on a live network. The biggest change is philosophical: Proof of History, Solana’s calling card at launch, stops keeping time for consensus next week.
