Let’s start with a quick disclaimer: we used to write many similar articles several years ago. The reason was simple: Google searches generally show demand for the cryptocurrency sector among retail investors. After all, institutions don’t turn to the world’s largest search engine to ask questions about buying BTC or altcoins. They have their own methods.
However, the tide has since turned, with retail investors adopting a different attitude. The charts we will present in this article prove that actual Google searches for BTC or crypto as a whole have dropped, especially during bear market years. But now there is an interesting change.
Buying crypto is back
The first chart below shows that searches for “buy cryptocurrencies” dropped in late 2021 – just as BTC and alts were drawing the ATHs of the time, and fell below 20 for over a year; yes, it coincided with the bear market. They rose slightly in May 2024 (as prices soared), fell again when the market cooled, and surged at the end of the year when BTC and alts were booming after the US presidential elections.
Another decline followed in mid-2025, as the market saw another decline, and it reached a five-year high in August. Shortly after, Bitcoin hit a new (and final) all-time high of just over $126,000. After the October 2025 crash, the leading cryptocurrency entered a 10-11 month bear market, during which searches for “buy crypto” decreased significantly.
The yearly low was reached in July, when BTC fell below $58,000, and most alternatives struggled just as much. But since then, searches have increased sharply and are expected to break the 2026 record in October. Needless to say, prices have recovered and we are far from recent lows. In other words: the retail model has repeated itself perfectly again.

What about Bitcoin?
The landscape around BTC itself is less straightforward. Searches for “buy bitcoin” have been below 40 on average for four years in a row – from the end of 2021 to the end of 2025. Even the US elections couldn’t really end this negative streak. They finally recovered in August 2025, just months before BTC rose to $126,000, then fell again in January, before suddenly hitting a new multi-year high in February.
This lasted for a month, as requests quickly dropped to 40-50 over the next few months. Although it rose again in September, the October projections are quite different from those for “buy crypto” as current Google Trends data shows a massive drop towards 20. As such, it’s pretty safe to determine that while retail is indeed returning, they aren’t specifically looking for BTC.
